Geography, B.A. or B.S. + M.A.

The Geography Beach EDGE program is intended to streamline access to our Master of Arts degree program for qualified and promising undergraduates. A maximum of 12 units may be double counted as part of the B.A. or B.S. degree toward completion of the M.A. degree.

The Geography M.A. program consists of at least 30 units including core requirements, topical seminars, a thesis, and electives. A minimum of 21 units of the M.A degree must be at the 500 or 600 level. For split level (400/500) classes, EDGE students should enroll in the 500-level section.

Students in the Geography EDGE Program may select up to 12 units from a list of electives to be double counted and applied toward the M.A. degree. These units must be completed in residence at CSULB.

Courses excluded from double-counting are GEOG 596, all GEOG 600-level seminars (GEOG 600, GEOG 640, GEOG 650, GEOG 666 and GEOG 680), and GEOG 698 thesis units. These courses will be taken once EDGE students are matriculated into the graduate program. With Advisor consent, students who have successfully completed GEOG 596 may enroll in GEOG 696. GEOG 696 is the only 6XX level courses Beach EDGE students may take until they have completed the B.A. or B.S. degree.

Double-Counting of Courses - Electives for Geography Beach EDGE

Students in the Geography EDGE Program may select up to 12 units of electives to be double counted and applied toward the M.A. degree. For split level (double-numbered) (400/500) classes, EDGE students should enroll in the 500-level section. Two-unit Methods courses are required for the master’s degree.

The methods courses may be selected as electives for B.A. or B.S. students in the Beach EDGE program and are designated with an asterisk *. Students should consult with a department advisor if they have any course selection questions.

Beach EDGE students choose 12 units (3-4 courses) of the following to double-count towards both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees:

Geospatial Techniques / Methods

Human & Cultural Geography

Physical & Environmental Geography

Other - Advisor Approval Required

Eligibility, Application, Deadlines, and Additional Information are Detailed on the Beach EDGE and Geography websites.
