Introduction

Chicano and Latino Studies (CHLS) examines Latino histories, identities, and experiences within societal and cultural contexts. Interdisciplinary by design, CHLS integrates the humanities, social sciences, and creative arts to develop critical analysis, cultural literacy, and civic engagement.

The department offers a B.A. in Chicano and Latino Studies (including a Special Track for double majors that allows two approved non‑CHLS electives) and a minor in Chicano and Latino Studies.

CHLS supports timely graduation. Courses fulfill lower‑ and upper‑division General Education and GWAR Writing Intensive requirements while satisfying CHLS program requirements. With careful planning of CHLS and cross‑listed coursework, students work with the Department Chair and Undergraduate Advisor to map efficient pathways, including options with multiple majors or minors.

CHLS also supports student application of learning beyond classrooms to prepare students for careers. Students put their learning into practice through community‑engaged projects, instructionally related activities, service learning, and collaboration with faculty on research, archival projects, public programs, and presentations, and through creative work including art exhibitions, performances, poetry readings, public speaking, and student publications.

The department hosts study abroad and field experiences, sponsors student leadership associations, offers annual scholarships, and maintains El Centro (MHB‑215)-a student lounge and resource hub. For current program information, advising hours, and student opportunities, visit the department office (MHB‑201) or the department website.
