Chicano and Latino Studies, B.A.

Requirements


The major in Chicano and Latino Studies consists of 33 units.

Lower Division (6 units):


Upper Division (27 units)


Choose15 units of electives from the following courses.


 The electives are arranged into two tracks-Cultural Studies and Social Inquiry-to help you plan, but you may select freely from either track to satisfy the 15 units. 

Departmental Language Requirement:


Take one of the following options:

Two years of college Spanish


Successful completion of the following course:


High School Advanced Placement Exam in Spanish Language or Literature


A score of 4 or above on the high school advanced placement exam in Spanish language or literature

Successful completion of a CHLS department proficiency exam


Special Track


In addition to the general major in Chicano and Latino Studies, the department also offers a program for students who wish to complete a Special Track major in Chicano and Latino Studies. Within the Special Track, students may receive up to a maximum of 6 units of credit for upper division Chicano and Latino Studies related course work taken from other disciplines. Students wishing to pursue the Special Track major must develop an approved program of study in consultation with the Chicano and Latino Studies Department chair and/or academic advisor.

The Special Track consists of 33 units total, 27 of which must be upper division, including the following:

Special Track (15 units):


A maximum of 6 units of coursework from other disciplines may be credited toward the major with approval from the Chicano and Latino Studies Department Advisor. Students must also complete 9 units of CHLS Upper‑Division electives selected from the following elective courses.

The electives are organized into two tracks-Cultural Studies and Social Inquiry-to support academic planning, but students may choose freely from either track to fulfill their unit requirement.

Language Requirement:

The language requirement may be met by one of the following options:

Two years of college Spanish

Successful completion of the following:
