ITEP Multiple Subject Credential Program (Code 200)

The Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) combines the study of academic subjects aligned to California standards for the K-8 curriculum with professional preparation courses and field experiences leading to a Multiple Subject Credential.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive both a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and a Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential. Within the Integrated Teacher Education Program there are 104 units of required baccalaureate-level coursework and 31 units of credential-specific coursework.

Students in the ITEP program who do not advance to the Credential portion of the program will be eligible to change majors into the BA-only program and receive a B.A. in Liberal Studies. They may also apply for admission to the postbaccalaureate Multiple Subject Credential Program.

There are multiple pathways to the teaching profession. ITEP is designed for students who begin their undergraduate education at CSULB or who transfer into the University in pursuit of both a baccalaureate degree as well as a multiple subject teaching credential. Prospective credential candidates who already hold a bachelor’s degree, or who need information about other pathways and options in teacher credentialing, should refer to the sections of this catalog which describe programs in Teacher Education, Single Subject Teacher Education, and Advanced Studies in Education and Counseling. Further information about teacher preparation programs can also be obtained from the College of Education at (562) 985-1105 or online at www.csulb.edu/ced.

Coursework for the ITEP Multiple Subject Credential Program includes the entire 104 units of the Liberal Studies Core and the following 31 units:

Student Teaching (16 units)

Students must obtain a Student Teaching Application from the website and apply to student teach at the beginning of the semester prior to take the course listed below (please see the Student Teaching section of the MSCP Handbook for more information).

  • EDEL 482-Student Teaching in Diverse Classrooms (16 units)

Bilingual Authorizations (BILA)

The BILA pathway or add-on allows students to obtain an additional Bilingual Authorization (BILA) to teach in Dual Language classrooms.  This pathway is for candidates that wish to teach in classrooms where the language of emphasis is appropriate for instruction and in situations where teachers use the target language for explanation, preview-review, and interaction with families. The BILA pathway is available for candidates in any of the Post-Bac Pathways, as well as the ITEP Undergraduate Pathways. For more information on the Bilingual Authorization and requirements, refer to the Bilingual Authorization website.

For students pursuing an ITEP Pathway and Spanish Bilingual Authorization, two courses from the core requirements are encouraged:

  • Area I, Group 6. Children’s Literature: Take SPAN 320   “Literacy and Orality for Bilingual Teaching”
  • Area IV, Group 5. California History: Take CHLS 305   “Chicana/o and Latina/o California History”

For students pursuing an ITEP Pathway and Spanish Bilingual Authorization, two courses from the core requirements are not required and students should instead complete a Spanish BILA course (EDEL 453S   and/or CHLS 340  ):
