Mechanical Engineering, B.S.

(120 units)

The opportunity to explore a particular area of interest is provided by additional elective courses in the senior year. Several industry and professional society sponsored scholarships and internships are available to upper division mechanical engineering students. Further information is available in the department office.

The undergraduate program in mechanical engineering offered at the Long Beach campus accepts both freshmen and transfer students. Students are admitted to the program following the university admission guidelines for freshmen and major specific admission criteria for transfer students.

Extension Program

The undergraduate program in mechanical engineering is also offered as an extension program at Lancaster University Center, Lancaster, CA as part of the Antelope Valley Engineering Programs. This special program offered through the College of Professional and International Education (CPIE) only accepts upper division transfer students with specific admission requirements. The extension program is a cohort-based model, allowing students to proceed as a group through the program placing greater emphasis on teamwork.

BSME Program Educational Objectives

The goal of the undergraduate program in mechanical engineering is to produce well-rounded engineers prepared for careers in mechanical engineering or related disciplines, utilizing an excellent education in the fundamentals of engineering mathematics, sciences, and design in order to:

  • Create innovative solutions responsive to customer needs and meeting societal challenges;
  • Apply their knowledge to communicating and translating ideas and plans into working engineering systems;
  • Effectively function as a team member and/or leader in global, multi-disciplinary technical environments.

Student Learning Outcomes

The ME program Student Outcomes used to meet the Program Educational Objectives are the same as the ABET “A through K”:

  1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.
  2. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
  3. An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.
  4. An ability to function on a multidisciplinary team.
  5. An ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
  6. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
  7. An ability to communicate effectively.
  8. The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.
  9. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, lifelong learning.
  10. A knowledge of contemporary issues.
  11. An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Major Declaration

Freshmen admission to engineering majors is to a ‘premajor’ status (i.e., Pre-Mechanical Engineering). Continuation in the major will be subject to meeting specific lower division course and GPA requirements at CSULB that indicate the student’s ability to succeed and complete the major. Transfer applicants and CSULB students seeking admission into Mechanical Engineering at the Long Beach campus must also meet similar major specific requirements. To become fully admitted into the Mechanical Engineering major at the Long Beach campus, all prospective students (i.e., pre-majors, undeclared, major changes) must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA and complete the following lower-division courses:

Core Lower Division Major Requirements:

(grade of “C” or better required)

General Education Foundations Courses:

  • Written and Oral Communication

BS Mechanical Engineering - Antelope Valley Program Requirements

To be admitted to the Antelope Valley Engineering Program (AVEP) BS Mechanical Engineering - Antelope Valley offered at the Lancaster University Center, all prospective students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on all transferable course work attempted and qualify as upper-division transfers with a minimum of 60 units.

Major Specific Transfer Requirements

To be considered for admission to the BS in Mechanical Engineering - Antelope Valley major, applicants must demonstrate the following:

Minimum Cumulative GPA: 2.5

Minimum lower division preparation (grade of C or better required):

  • 8 semester units of mathematics (MATH 122  , MATH 123  )
  • 4 semester units of calculus-based physics (PHYS 151
  • 4 semester units of Calculus III (MATH 224  )
  • 4 semester units of Physics Electricity and Magnetism (PHYS 152  )
  • 5 semester units of general chemistry (CHEM 111A  )

Any applicant who meets both the CSU Transfer Eligibility requirements and the Major Specific Transfer Requirements will be entered into a competitive admission pool for the BS in Mechanical Engineering - Antelope Valley major.

Preferred Requirements

Applicants in the competitive admission pool are evaluated for cohort readiness by checking for completion of Preferred Requirements. Preferred Requirements are considered satisfied if the course will be complete prior to the start of the AVEP cohort or can be reasonably completed during the first semester of the program.

Preferred Requirements must be completed with a grade of C or better:

Major Courses:

  • 3 semester units of computer methods (MAE 205   or equivalent)
  • 3 semester units of engineering design graphics (MAE 205  )
  • 3 semester units of calculus-based statics (C E 205  )

General Education

  • 9 semester units of category C (3 units of Art, 3 units of Humanities, and an additional 3 units of arts or Humanities)*
  • 9 semester units of category D (3 units of US History, 3 units of Constitution & American Ideals)*
  • 3 semester units of category E (self-integration)

* Choose 3 to 6 units in category C and/or D in Global Issues (3 units) and U.S. Human Diversity (3 units). See ASSIST.org, “For GE/Breadth Agreement” menu item.

Degree Progress

First-Time Engineering freshmen pre-major and transfer students must complete the Engineering Degree Progress Requirements within their first academic year.  At the end of the second full semester, typically Spring, students who have not met the requirements must either declare another major or meet with an Academic Advisor from the Engineering Student Success Center (ESSC) to determine if the student’s performance in the courses merits an additional Semester to complete.  Such students must submit a Degree Progress Extension Petition with the College of Engineering Dean’s Office.

First-Time Freshmen:

A grade of “C” or better must be achieved in the following within one academic year.

Transfer Students:

A grade of “C” or better must be achieved in the following within one academic year.

All Engineering Majors

All Engineering majors are expected to make satisfactory degree progress by completing attempted units, limiting repeats/withdrawals, satisfying critical benchmark courses in a timely manner, and maintaining minimum 2.0 Overall and Major GPAs.  Degree Progress is monitored for all undergraduate students each semester. Petitions to attempt a course for the third time are only considered in extenuating circumstances. Students who are not making satisfactory degree progress as described above will have a hold on their registration and are required to meet with their advisor to develop an academic plan.  Failure to satisfy the academic progress requirements will result in the student being disqualified from the major.

Requirements

A grade of “C” or better must be achieved in all of the courses required for the major. A minimum of 120 units is required.
