Kinesiology, Option in Exercise Science, B.S. + Exercise Science, M.S.


Students in the Beach EDGE Exercise Science program will complete the requirements for both the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and the Master of Science in Exercise Science.

Admissions

Eligibility and minimum requirements:

  • Matriculated at CSULB as an undergraduate in the B.S. Kinesiology, option Exercise Science.
  • Completed at least 60 units
  • Minimum CSULB GPA of 3.0
  • Not a double major
  • Student must have earned a ‘B’ or better in KIN 300, KIN 301, and KIN 312. 
    • Note: A student may apply based on an anticipated grade, but the admission decision will be delayed until final grades are submitted.

Application materials:

  • Completed Beach EDGE Application Form
  • Unofficial Transcripts from CSULB and all universities/colleges where prerequisite courses were completed.
  • CV/Résumé
  • Statement of Purpose: (750 word minimum; 1,250 word maximum) that discusses the following points:
    • What motivates the student to apply for a graduate degree
    • Specific area(s) of interest in Exercise Science
    • Preferred faculty mentor and rationale
    • Personal goals and objectives for earning a master’s
    • Intended culminating experience (comprehensive exam, project, or thesis), including general topic area
    • If thesis or project, the general area of focus of interest
  • One letter of recommendation from an Exercise Science Faculty member at CSULB who can evaluate the student’s potential for graduate success.
  • Admitted students must subsequently complete and sign the Beach EDGE Agreement form.

Deadlines:

  • April 1 for Fall Entry Consideration

Internal application and admissions process:

  1. Verify that all eligibility requirements listed above are met.
  2. Assemble all application materials, combining them into a single PDF if possible.
  3. Submit the materials through the Qualtrics Application form by the deadline.
  4. Applications that include anticipated grades will be placed on hold until final grades are posted.
  5. Faculty review each complete application holistically. Decisions are communicated to the applicant via CSULB email.
  6. Admitted students must sign and return the Beach EDGE Agreement form. After the Agreement is received, the student will receive advising for course enrollment aligned with the program roadmap.

Program Requirements

Exercise Science Beach EDGE students may select from the list below to double-count between Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. Students should consult with an advisor if questions arise. 

Culmination

Students in the Beach EDGE program may choose to pursue the thesis, project, or comprehensive exam track.

  • Thesis Track: Students opting to complete a thesis are required to find a faculty research advisor prior to the end of their first semester in the program to facilitate the expedited timeline. Students will take 6 units of KIN 698 to support their thesis work as part of their elective requirements.
  • Project Track: Students opting to complete a project are required to find a faculty research advisor prior to the end of their first semester in the program to facilitate the expedited timeline. Students will take 3 units of KIN 698 to support their thesis work as part of their elective requirements.
  • Comprehensive Exam Track: Students option to complete a comprehensive exam will have to pass both written and oral portions of the comprehensive exam and complete 6 units of electives from appropriate areas of interest in consultation with their faculty advisor.
