Multiple Subject Credential Program ITEP Pathway

The Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) is designed for undergraduate students in Liberal Studies, which combines the study of academic subjects aligned to California standards for the TK-8 curriculum with professional preparation courses and clinical experiences leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and a Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential, Education Specialist Credential, or both.

A teacher with a Multiple Subject Credential is authorized to teach grades TK through 8 in self-contained classrooms. CSULB’s Multiple Subject Credential Program ITEP Pathway prepares students to be credentialed in the State of California for elementary instruction with an equity-minded focus.  MSCP candidates gain experience in urban classroom settings by engaging in daytime clinical practice experiences, taking subject-matter methodology courses, and completing one or two semesters of student teaching practica. The program can be completed in four to five years, depending upon when prerequisites and corequisites are taken, when the candidate begins the program, and whether a part-time or full-time schedule is followed. Program requirements must be met within seven years of the date of admission to the program.

The Liberal Studies Department currently has three Preliminary ITEP Multiple Subject Credential Program (MSCP) Pathways:

  • Multiple Subjects Credential Program ITEP Pathway
  • UTEACH Multiple Subject Credential Program ITEP Pathway
  • ITEP Bilingual Authorization in Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, and Vietnamese (available for each pathway)

Student Teaching

The final phase of the ITEP MSCP is student teaching. For some candidates, student teaching is a full-time five days per week experience for the length of the university semester. Candidates in alternative pathways (i.e., UTEACH) may have different student teaching schedules. All student teachers will have placement in public school TK-8 classrooms. For more information on student teaching assignments, please visit the Multiple Subject Credential Program website. A separate application is required to advance to student teaching. Applications for student teaching must be submitted to the CED’s Student Success & Advising Center one semester prior to the first assignment. Application packets are available at www.csulb.edu/mscp. Firm deadlines for submitting applications to student teach are:

  • March 15 - for Fall Student Teaching
  • October 1 - for Spring Student Teaching

Advancement to Student Teaching Requirements

Students must meet the following requirements to advance to student teaching:

  1. Completion of all program prerequisite, corequisite and subject specific pedagogy requirements. Students must complete all five subject specific pedagogy (methods) courses with a 3.0 grade point average and no grade lower than “C.” A grade of “D” or “F” in a program course will result in being placed on academic warning. In addition, the prerequisite and corequisite courses must be completed with a “C” grade or better. The overall grade point average must continue to meet the program admission standard.
  2. A negative tuberculosis skin test or chest x-ray valid through completion of student teaching.
  3. Valid CTC Clearance (Certificate of Clearance, Activity Supervisor Permit, or Child Development Permit).
  4. Bilingual Authorization candidates must meet additional bilingual authorization pedagogy and culture of emphasis requirements (see BILA Pathway, below).
  5. Submission of a student teaching application by the appropriate deadline.

Student Teaching (12 units)

Student Teaching is the culminating activity also known as clinical practice. Students must obtain a Student Teaching Application from the website and apply to student teach at the beginning of the semester prior to taking the course listed below (please see the Student Teaching section of the MSCP Handbook for more information).

Student Teaching Seminar (4 units)

Candidates concurrently enroll in a student teaching seminar while student teaching, which provides support for the Multiple Subject CalTPA. Course enrollment depends on the pathway that the candidate is pursuing.

Bilingual Authorizations (BILA)

The BILA pathway or add-on allows students to obtain an additional Bilingual Authorization (BILA) to teach in Dual Language classrooms.  This pathway is for candidates that wish to teach in classrooms where the language of emphasis is appropriate for instruction and in situations where teachers use the target language for explanation, preview-review, and interaction with families. The BILA pathway is available for candidates in any of the Post-Bac Pathways, as well as the ITEP Undergraduate Pathways. For more information on the Bilingual Authorization and requirements, refer to the Bilingual Authorization website.

For students pursuing an ITEP Pathway and Spanish Bilingual Authorization, two courses from the core requirements are encouraged:

  • Area I, Group 6. Children’s Literature: Take SPAN 320  (3 units) “Literacy and Orality for Bilingual Teaching”
  • Area IV, Group 5. California History: Take CHLS 305  (3 units) “Chicana/o and Latina/o California History”

For students pursuing an ITEP Pathway and Spanish Bilingual Authorization, two courses from the Core requirements are not required and students should instead complete a Spanish BILA course (EDEL 453S  and/or CHLS 340 ):

  • Area V, Group 3. Ethics, Values, Beliefs: Not Required.
  • Area V, Group 4. Visual Arts: Not Required.
