2026-2027 Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog
Anthropology, M.A.

This graduate degree in anthropology is comprised of a 15-unit core, 6-unit thesis or project, and 12 units of electives approved by the graduate advisor.
|
Prerequisites
- A bachelor’s degree in anthropology; or
- A bachelor’s degree with 24 units of upper-division courses in anthropology, comparable to those required of anthropology majors at this University;
- A B.A. degree in any field and other background appropriate to graduate study in anthropology. Students whose background in anthropology seems inadequate may be required to fulfill specific undergraduate deficiencies before admission to candidacy. Deficiencies will be determined by the departmental graduate advisor after consultation with the student and a review of the student’s transcript records.
Advancement to Candidacy
- Acceptance into the M.A. program by the department;
- Satisfaction of the general University requirements for advancement to candidacy; and
- Approval of the candidate’s graduate program by the departmental graduate advisor.
A minimum of 33 units of graduate and upper-division courses approved by the Graduate Advisor.

M.A. Thesis or Project
Students must complete the culminating activity requirements for the thesis or project and complete six (6) units of ANTH 698. |
