Introduction
The department maintains close ties with teachers, schools, and informal science institutions in the greater Long Beach area. Faculty and staff projects focus on science teachers and learners at all levels, pre-K through university. From the Head Start on Science project, which develops a “sense of wonder” and excitement for those working with preschool and kindergarten children, to collaboration with university science colleagues, the department hosts grants and projects impacting the entire preK-16 and informal science education spectrum. Faculty engage in outreach and professional development for inservice K-12 teachers and informal science educators. The department sponsors the Science Learning Center, Young Scientists’ Camp programs, research seminars, and the Association of Future Science Educators (AFSE) which is a student chapter of the California Science Teachers Association.
