The Single Subject Credential is offered in the subject areas listed below. Most of the subject areas have subject matter programs that have been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). Subject matter competency can be completed either through degree, the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) evalution of coursework aligned to the CTC subject matter domains, or through a combination of coursework and CSET subtests. Completion of a subject matter program as an undergraduate major (or as a returning post-bac student) meets the subject matter competence requirement for the single subject teaching credential. With careful planning, it may be possible for undergraduates to complete the prerequisite and corequisite professional preparation (education) courses concurrent with the major. Candidates should consult the Credential Advisor in their area of interest to develop an efficient program plan.
