Spanish, M.A.


The MA program seeks to provide advanced knowledge of Peninsular and Latin American literature, its history, and major writers and works, combined with the aims and methods of scholarly research in the field. The program of study also includes a component of Spanish linguistics. Our MA graduates go on to pursue careers in education, translation, hospitality, entertainment, public health, development, business, as well as to pursue doctoral studies. The program provides training in language pedagogy. A limited number of Teaching Associate positions are available to qualified candidates.

Prerequisites


  1. A Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish with minimum “B” (3.0) GPA overall; or
  2. A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 18 upper division units in Spanish equivalent to the Basic Core of the B.A. in Spanish at this University. Minimum “B” (3.0) GPA overall. Deficiencies and a recommended follow-up course of action will be determined by the Graduate Advisor in consultation with the student and study of transcript records.

Advancement to Candidacy


  1. Approval of a graduate program of study by the graduate advisor. 
  2. Requirements: All deficiencies have been removed; the student has maintained at least a “B” (3.0) GPA in all work in Spanish.
  3. The candidate is advanced to Candidacy by the Graduate Advisor in consultation with the candidate after 15 units are completed. 
  4. The candidate must file for graduation no later than semester prior to the completion of the program. 

Requirements


  1. Completion of a minimum of 30 units in SPAN in the 500 and 600 series distributed as follows: 2 courses in Linguistics + 2 courses in Latin American Literature/Culture + 2 courses in Peninsular Literature/Culture + 4 electives.
  2. Demonstrated intermediate level competence or pass an examination at the intermediate level in any language other than English. Major or minor in a second foreign language or any other language may be used to fulfill this requirement, upon approval by the graduate advisor.         
  3. Maintain a GPA of at least “B” (3.0) in all Spanish courses taken towards the Spanish, M.A. 
  4. Pass comprehensive examinations based on Graduate Reading List. 
  5. Maximum of six units of transfer graduate credit is allowed, subject to approval by the graduate advisor.
