German, B.A.


This degree is approved for distance education by the WSCUC.

In this program, efforts are made to accommodate needs of students who simultaneously pursue many majors including other RGRLL programs, International Studies, Biology, Business, Engineering, or a certificate in Travel and Tourism.

Completion of the German major (plus 6 additional units) meets the subject matter competence requirement for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in German. Prospective students should consult the undergraduate German Advisor and the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Program Advisor early to plan their program.

Requirements


Lower Division:


One year of intermediate German or equivalent. Students who have completed sufficient high school German may take upper-division courses as soon as lower-division requirements have been met or with advisor permission. Students with AP credit 4 or 5 can enroll immediately in upper divisions courses. Native speakers of German may not enroll for credit in GERM 101A /GERM 101B , GERM 201A /GERM 201B , or GERM 301  GERM 302 .

Upper Division:


(minimum 30 units, 36 for Single Subject)

Core (18 Units)


I. Complete all of the following courses with grades of “C” or better at CSULB on the Long Beach Campus (12 units):

I. Complete any two of the following literature and culture courses (6 units total) with grades of “C” on the Long Beach Campus:

A minimum of 21 units of upper-division courses must be taken at CSULB.

Single Subject Teaching Credential in German


Completion of the German major meets the subject matter competence requirement for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in German. Prospective students should consult the undergraduate German Advisor and the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Credential Program Advisor early to plan their program.

In addition to meeting the subject matter competence requirement for the Teaching Credential, prospective teachers of German are also required to complete 45 units of professional preparation in the Single Subject Credential Program, including student teaching. Students may begin the professional preparation courses as early as the junior year. With careful planning, it is possible to complete all of the credential program courses, except for student teaching, as an undergraduate. Courses may also be completed as a post-baccalaureate student.
