Design History and Theory Minor

The Minor in Design History and Theory allows students to develop an understanding of the complex global issues impacting design of different periods and cultures from a variety of perspectives, integrating social, political, economic, material, cultural, functional, and aesthetic approaches.

The Minor in Design History and Theory requires 15 semester units of course work.

Requirements (15 units)

Take 15 units from the following courses:

DESN 110 - Foundation Design History (3 units)
DESN 268 - History and Theory of Sustainability in Design (3 units)
DESN 315 - Form and Figures: The Mathematics of Design (3 units)
DESN 367 - History and Theory of Architecture (3 units)
DESN 368 - History and Theory of Design (3 units)
DESN 369 - History of Furniture and Decorative Arts (3 units)
DESN 469 - Entertainment Design: History and Practice (3 units)

Students may substitute the below courses in the Minor with advisor approval (up to 6 units):

AH 111A - Foundation Art History: Prehistory-c. 1500, Middle East, North Africa, Europe (3 units)
AH 111B - Foundation Art History: c.1300-present, Europe and the United States (3 units)
DESN 470 - Design in Contemporary Society (3 units)
Other relevant courses approved by advisor
