This degree is approved for distance education by the WSCUC.
This program prepares students to become professional nurses. Two distinct categories of students are eligible for admission: The “Basic” program student who enters the University without having completed a first level nursing program (diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing) and the “Registered Nurse” student who, having completed an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), desires further study to expand their nursing capabilities to the BSN professional level.
The “Basic” program student is eligible to take the National Council for Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to practice as a registered nurse (RN) upon completion of the program. All graduates are recommended for certification as a public health nurse in the State of California. Admission Under Impaction
Please review the CSULB Admissions website for information related to Major Specific Requirements and Impaction Criteria based on student status as a prospective, admitted or transfer.
In order to be considered for transfer admission to the Nursing major, students must complete a series of prerequisite courses: written communication, oral communication, critical thinking, HDEV 190 or PSY 110 or SOC 170 or STAT 108 or STAT 118 , BIOL 207 , BIOL 208 , BIOL 201 , and CHEM 140 . Each course must be completed with a “C” or better grade; when all prerequisites are completed the GPA for the prerequisite courses must be “B” or better (3.0 or better). Applicants to the nursing major are normally admitted by the time they reach junior standing.
Degree Progress for Pre-Nursing Students
Pre-Nursing students must complete the following requirements within four semesters of being admitted into the University. At the end of four semesters, students who have not met the requirements must meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss their degree progress and explore resources for declaring a new major.
At the end of the second semester, pre-nursing students must have a grade of “C” or better in general education certified written communication, oral communication, and critical thinking courses, HDEV 190 or PSY 110 or SOC 170 or STAT 108 or STAT 118 , and CHEM 140 as well as a combined GPA of 3.0 or better in these
prerequisite courses.
At the end of the fourth semester, pre-nursing students must have a “C” grade or better in BIOL 201 , BIOL 207 , and BIOL 208 as well as a combined GPA of 3.0 or better in these prerequisite courses.
The following suite of courses must be completed with a minimum GPA of a 3.0: BIOL 201, BIOL 207 , BIOL 208 , CHEM 140 , and HDEV 190 or PSY 110 or SOC 170 or STAT 108 or STAT 118 .
Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.
Requirements
Criminal background check, drug screen, health insurance, immunizations, medical clearance, and malpractice insurance are required for clinical coursework.
To be recommended to the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) to take the licensure exam as a Registered Nurse, students must successfully complete the RN Prelicensure Exit Assessment. The results of this assessment will not impact the conferring of the bachelor’s degree.
