Health Science, Community Health Education Option, B.S.

Bachelor of Science in Health Science

The basic University requirements for graduation with a B.S. Degree in Health Science consist of:

completion of general education requirements,
completion of all courses identified on the Program Planner for the Option selected, with no grade lowerthan a “C” for each listed course or approved substitute,
completion of a minimum of 120 units, at least 40 units of which must be upper division. Upper divisioncourses are numbered 300 to 499.

Option in Community Health Education

The Community Health Education option is designed for persons whose occupational objective is to serve as a community health educator with a public, not for profit or corporate health agency.

The basic University requirements for graduation with a B.S. Degree in Health Science consist of:

Completion of general education requirements
Completion of all courses identified on the Program Planner for the Option selected, with no grade lower than a “C” for each listed course or approved substitute
Completion of a minimum of 120 units, at least 40 units of which must be upper division. Upper division courses are numbered 300 to 499.

Lower Division:

Take the following courses:

H SC 201 - Introduction to Public Health (3 units)
H SC 210 - Contemporary Health Issues (3 units)
PSY 100 - General Psychology (3 units)

Take one of the following courses:

NUTR 132 - Introductory Nutrition (3 units)
NUTR 132 is routinely offered and is the recommended course for Community Health Option students.
RSCH 207 - Interdisciplinary Approaches to Health Disparities (3 units)
RSCH 296B - Introduction to Behavioral Research Methods (3 units)

Take either BIOL 205 or both BIOL 207 and BIOL 208

Take one of the following courses:

BIOL 201 - General Microbiology for Health Professionals (4 units)
H SC 250 - Public Health Biology (3 units)

Take one of the following courses:

HDEV 190 - Elementary Statistics (4 units)
PSY 110 - Introductory Statistics (4 units)
SOC 170 - Elementary Statistics (4 units)
STAT 108 - Statistics for Everyday Life (3 units)
STAT 118 - Introductory Business Statistics (3 units)

Upper Division:

Take all of the following courses:

H SC 485 - Internship in Community Health Education (3 units)

Students may elect to complete one of the following tracks under the Community Health Education Option

If the unit count permits, a student can select additional tracks. Courses can be reused between the general requirements and the following track requirements.
