This degree is designed to prepare graduates for a variety of careers in the biomedical engineering field. The program builds upon a strong base of biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering science to develop a clinically oriented biomedical engineer to serve medical and industrial needs. It includes courses and laboratories in biomedical engineering, physiology and biology. Elective units are available in the senior year to explore individual areas of interest.
Mission Statement
Consistent with both the missions of California State University, Long Beach and the College of Engineering, the mission of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at CSULB is to serve the university, and the broader academic and non-academic communities through education, research, and scholarly activities in a diverse, student-centered environment.
Program Educational Objectives
The Biomedical Engineering Program objectives are to:
- prepare highly skilled biomedical engineers, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, to serve healthcare institutions, academia, and industry at regional, state, national and international levels
- provide a high standard of education in an open, student-centered and inclusive learning environment that promotes intellectual growth and lifelong learning, including entering and succeeding in advanced degree programs in STEM fields
- foster personal and professional success with commitment to ethical and social responsibility, both as individuals and in team environments through effective communication
- develop professionals who employ their fundamental and broad knowledge in BME and technical skills to determine innovative and practical solutions to meet the societal challenges of today and tomorrow
Student Learning Outcomes
The Biomedical Engineering student learning outcomes “1-7” are consistent with those suggested by ABET.
- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
- an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
- an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
- an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
- an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
- an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
- an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
