Nursing - Registered Nurse, B.S.N.

Admission

Registered Nurse (RN) applicants are required to apply for admission to the University and do the following:

• 1. Hold a current RN license or be eligible for licensure in the state of California;
• 2.Have graduated from an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program that is accredited by a nationally recognized nursing accrediting organization or evaluation of diploma program for equivalency by an Accredited Assoicate Degree program. The community college must also be regionally accredited as an institution of higher education. Students holding an Associate Degree in a non-nursing major do not meet this requirement and are ineligible for admission to the program.  
• 3. Have 56 to 70 transferable units including statistics and chemistry (CHEM 140 preferred);
• 4. A minimum GPA of 2.75 in all community college courses required for the Associate Degree in Nursing
• 5. Fulfill the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) either prior to admission or within the first semester in the program.

Students admitted to the School of Nursing must also pass a criminal background check and urine drug screen.  Furthermore, they must hold current health insurance, meet immunization requirements, have medical clearance for physical functions of the program, and comply with all clinical agency policies to attend clinical courses.  Some of these requirements may need annual renewal and/or more frequent re-evaluation based on clinical agency requirements.  Additionally, some clinical agencies may have additional requirements, e.g., fingerprinting, etc to participate in that rotation.  Failure to maintain compliance with these requirements may prevent students from completing their degree.

Registered Nurses graduating from a diploma program are urged to seek information/admission to a community college that offers the opportunity to earn academic credit for a diploma nursing program and then transfer into the RN-BSN completion program at CSULB.. 

Requirements

Prerequisites: Completion of an accredited Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) degree and current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure or eligibility to take the RN licensure exam (NCLEX-RN). *The nursing program must be accredited by a national nursing organization and the college must hold regional accreditation.

Satisfactory completion of an undergraduate statistics course suitable for general education math credit and an inorganic, organic, and/or biochemistry course (CHEM 140 or combined 5 units chemistry course is preferred).

Up to 21 units will be awarded by examination for demonstration of prior learning by passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN)- for Registered Nurse (RN) licensure.

Note: A grade of “C” or better is required for all undergraduate NRSG courses. 

Course of Study

A specific combination of general education, prerequisites, nursing and elective courses totaling 120 units for the R.N-BSN. program is required for graduation. All nursing courses in the nursing program must be taken in sequence unless permitted to do otherwise. Admission to the first course is by application which will be accepted upon successful attainment of the criteria listed above. Please check the School of Nursing website for specific application deadline dates.  The RN-BSN program does require a specific RN-BSN Nurisng Application from the School of Nursing. Progress in the nursing major requires that students maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA on all units attempted and attain a minimum of a “C” grade in each of the nursing courses as well as all required support courses. The student who earns less than a grade of “C” must repeat that course prior to being admitted to the next course in the nursing course sequence. A nursing course may be repeated one time. A break in the sequence of nursing courses may necessitate readmission on a space-available basis.
