Nursing, B.S.N.


(120 units)

This program is designed for students with no prior nursing education or prior nursing degree to qualify for the NCLEX-RN exam and become a professional registered nurse. If you are already an RN, this is not the program for you-please refer to the RN-BSN Completion program to complete your baccalaureate degree

Upon completion of this program, students are eligible to take the National Council for Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the State of California. All graduates also meet the recommendation for certification as a public health nurse in the State of California; students must apply for this certification if desired. The program is accredited by the California State Board of Registered Nursing, and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, 655 K Street NW, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20001, phone: 202-887-6791).

This degree is approved for distance education by the WSCUC.

Admission Under Impaction


Please review the CSULB Admissions website for information related to Major Specific Requirements and Impaction Criteria based on student status as a prospective, admitted or transfer. Detailed information about pre-requisite courses, pre-admission testing, interviews, and steps in the process can be viewed at the School of Nursing website-please refer to this page to avoid missing important steps in the admission process.  

To be considered for transfer admission to the Nursing major, students must complete a series of prerequisite courses: written communication, oral communication, critical thinking, HDEV 190  or PSY 110  or SOC 170  or STAT 108  or STAT 118 , BIOL 207 , BIOL 208 , BIOL 201 , and CHEM 111A  or CHEM 111B  or CHEM 112A  or CHEM 112B  or CHEM 140  or CHEM 220A  (with recommended lab course CHEM 223A ) or CHEM 220B  (with recommended lab course CHEM 223B ). Each course must be completed with a “C” or better grade; when all prerequisites are completed the GPA for the prerequisite courses must be “B” or better (3.0 or better).

Degree Progress for Pre-Nursing Students


Pre-Nursing students must complete the following requirements within four semesters of being admitted into the University. At the end of four semesters, students who have not met the requirements must meet with an Academic Advisor from the CHHS Advising Office to discuss their degree progress and explore resources for declaring a new major. 

Once pre-nursing students have completed the required pre-requisite courses, with a “C” or better in general education certified written communication, oral communication, and critical thinking courses, HDEV 190  or PSY 110  or SOC 170  or STAT 108  or STAT 118 BIOL 201 BIOL 207 BIOL 208 , and CHEM 111A  or CHEM 111B  or CHEM 112A  or CHEM 112B  or CHEM 140  or CHEM 220A  (with recommended lab course CHEM 223A ) or CHEM 220B  (with recommended lab course CHEM 223B ) as well as a combined GPA of 3.0 they may apply to the School of Nursing. A separate BSN Application is required by the School of Nursing to review and rank applicants for admission consideration.  

Students must also have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.

Admission Requirements


Criminal background check, drug screen, health insurance, immunizations, medical clearance, and malpractice insurance are required for clinical coursework.

To be recommended to the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) to take the licensure exam as a Registered Nurse, students must successfully complete the RN Prelicensure Exit Assessment. The results of this assessment will not impact the conferring of the bachelor’s degree.

    Students admitted to the School of Nursing must also pass a criminal background check and urine drug screen. Furthermore, they must hold current health insurance, meet immunization requirements, have medical clearance for physical functions of the program, and comply with all clinical agency policies to attend clinical courses. Some of these requirements may need annual renewal and/or more frequent re-evaluation based on clinical agency requirements. Additionally, some clinical agencies may have additional requirements, e.g., fingerprinting, etc to participate in that rotation.  Failure to maintain compliance with these requirements may prevent students from completing their degree.
