American Sign Language Linguistics and Deaf Culture, ASL - English Interpreting Option, B.A.

This degree is approved for distance education by the WSCUC.

This program is designed to teach students to be linguists who can work with signed and spoken languages and their cultures. The Option to our general BA expands on students’ language and culture training to additionally train them to become interpreters between ASL and English. For admission, students must receive a C or better in all required lower division courses, a 2 or higher on the ASLPI national exam, and have a successful interview with an invitation from the CSULB BA Option admissions committee to join a Fall semester cohort of 20-25 students.

As the interpreting courses must be taken in sequence, a student must receive grades of ‘C’ or higher in ASLD 311, ASLD 312, and ASLD 411 to continue with the cohort. A student not receiving a grade of ‘C’ or higher in any of these courses will be removed from the Option in Interpreting program. The student may re-apply to the program on the next cycle to join the following year’s cohort.
