Introduction
The Department of Journalism & Public Relations, which is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC), offers undergraduate programs that prepare students for careers in journalism, public relations and other media, editorial and storytelling-related industries. Students take courses that provide both a strong theoretical foundation and hands-on training in the skills they need to be successful communications professionals in the 21st century.
Throughout their coursework, journalism and public relations students have the opportunity to work as writers, editors, reporters, producers, designers and photographers at campus media affiliated with the department: the Daily Forty-Niner, DIG Magazine, DIG en Español and 22 West Media. Students also serve as account supervisors, creative directors, art directors, copywriters, event planners and social media managers on the Bateman Case Study Competition Team. The Bateman Case Study Competition is the prestigious national collegiate contest for public relations students.
The department is home to four active student organizations: National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), The Association of LGBTQ Journalists (NLGJA), Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). The department also sponsors special events for students, including Internship Week and Journalism & Public Relations Day.
All majors are required to complete at least one internship. Internship opportunities are abundant in Southern California, one of the nation’s largest media markets. Students in search of internships and professional development workshops such as resume writing and interview preparation can utilize CSULB College of Liberal Arts Career Readiness and Internship Program services along with the resources of the CSULB Career Development Center.
