CHEM 420 - Advanced Organic Chemistry Laboratory (3 units)
Prerequisites: CHEM 220B and CHEM 320L and either CHEM 361 or NSCI 361 , all with a grade of “C” or better. CHEM 331 is recommended. Modern methods in synthesis and characterization of organic compounds. Multistep synthesis, synthetically useful transformations and transition metal catalysis. Small molecule structure elucidation with an emphasis on NMR and mass spectrometry. Separations of complex reaction mixtures and utilization of inert atmosphere. In addition to regularly scheduled lectures, students are expected to attend three hours of lecture on use of chemical literature.
Letter grade only (A-F). Course fee may be required. (Lecture 1 hr., laboratory 6 hrs.)
